The School of the Arts will present John Cariani’s romantic comedy, “Almost, Maine,” March 1-5 at 7:30 p.m. and March 5 and 6 at 2 p.m. in Wismer Theatre, CSU, Chico’s intimate “black box” performance space located in the Performing Arts Center.

Seating is limited and purchasing tickets in advance at the University Box Office (530-898-6333) is recommended.

“Almost, Maine” is set on a cold, clear, and moonless night in the middle of winter. All is not quite what it seems in this remote, mythical town. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways.

The New York Post describes “Almost, Maine” as “Thornton Wilder crossed with ‘The Twilight Zone.’”

“‘Almost, Maine’ is a play about the bravest people in the world, those quietly desperate souls who are willing to ask to be loved,” said Director William Johnson, Department of Music and Theatre faculty member. “They know that in the vast, spectacular, cold beauty of the universe, the only warmth to be found is in connection with another human being, and the only solace to be had is in finding someone to love who wants to love you back.”

In this midwinter night’s dream, knees are bruised and hearts are broken. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend — almost.

Assisting Johnson in the production are Department of Music and Theatre faculty member Robert Pickering (scenic design), Department of Music and theatre staff member Sandra Barton (costume design), and students Paul Stevens (lighting design) and Cameron Hoffman (sound design). Sergio Manriquez is the stage manager.
The cast for “Almost, Maine” includes some of CSU, Chico’s most talented performers — Aaron Bayless (Pete/Lendall), Hannah Davies (Ginette/Marvalyn), Owen Hansen (East/Phil), Patrice Berry (Glory/Rhonda), Mickey Layson (Jimmy/Dave), Nicolette Ellis (Sandrine/Deena), Leanne Convis (Sandrine/Shelly), Alex Hilsee (Waitress/Hope), Bryan Eid (Steve/Man), and Lara Tenckhoff (Gayle/Marci).

Advance tickets, at $15 for general admission, $13 for senior citizens and $6 for students and children, are available at the University Box Office, 530-898-6333. For information about special accommodations seating, call 530-898-6333.
