Organ Series Concert Features Marian Metson and Rexphil Rallanka

Marian MetsonThe CSU, Chico Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to announce Glorious Duet, the Centennial Pipe Organ Series Recital on Friday, September 12th at 7:30 p.m. on the stage of Harlen Adams Theatre. This concert is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted at the door. All proceeds from the concert will support upkeep of the Centennial Organ and future organ concerts at Chico State.

“I’m pleased that Marian Metson and Rexphil Rallanka agreed to jointly present this recital for us,” said Dr. David Scholz, director of choral and vocal activities at CSU, Chico and coordinator of the organ recital series. “Both Marian and Rexphil often attend organ recitals here at CSU, Chico, so I’m glad that we can now appreciate their talents as superb organists. Anyone who has an interest in organ music or the spectacular Centennial Organ will greatly enjoy this performance.”

“We chose this program to show the great versatility of the Centennial organ built by the master builder, Munetaka Yokota,” said Ms. Metson. “The repertoire covers over four centuries and many styles of composers from Italy, Holland, Germany, England and America.” Pieces by Frescobaldi, C.P.E. Bach, Schumann, Buxtehude, Sweelinck, John Cook, Ives, Beethoven, Merkel, and of course Johann Sebastian Bach will be presented.

Ms. Metson holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin Wallace College, a Master of Music degree from Boston University and pursued additional study with Anton Heiller in Vienna. She served as Director of Music and Organist at First Lutheran Church in Yuba City for sixteen years. Previously she held positions as Assistant Organist at Memorial Church, Harvard University, as Director of Music at Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington D. C. and Belleville Congregational Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts. From 1981 to 1993 she taught organ at Boston University and performed frequently in the Boston area. During that period she recorded four CD's on important historic organs in and around Boston. Currently, Ms. Metson is the choir director at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Rocklin and teaches privately.

Rex RallankaMr. Rallanka is the Director of Music for the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento. He studied at the University of Notre Dame, where he received the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a second major in Piano Performance and the Master of Music in Organ Performance. His organ teachers include Craig Cramer, Paul Thornock, Gail Walton and Marian Metson. He has been a featured artist with Music in the Mountains and Grand Rapids Bach Festival. Mr. Rallanka has appeared in concert throughout the United States and Germany, including the Roman Catholic Cathedrals of Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Columbus.
