Symphonic Winds’ ‘Acclamations’ Concert Takes Place April 25th in Harlen Adams Theatre

CSU, Chico’s premier wind ensemble, The Symphonic Winds, presents its spring concert titled “Acclamations” on April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre.

The ensemble will perform a series of favorite marches, as well as "Lauds" by Ron Nelson, Martin Mailman’s "Litanies" and Maslanka’s "Give Us This Day.”

This concert also features several guest chamber ensembles, including a trombone quartet and a percussion ensemble. An expected high point of the concert is the performance of a student composed and conducted piece by the percussion ensemble.

“It’s a really exciting moment that we will be able to share with the audience,” said Royce Tevis, Director of Bands at Chico State.

Audiences should expect to be “blown away,” said Tevis, by the concert’s opening piece, “Ra!” by David Dzubay. Named after the Egyptian sun god, this modern piece will take audiences on an unexpected musical journey through an imagined ritual of sun worship.

“The motives behind the piece are not what you would call lyrical,” said Tevis. “It will require some understanding by the audience when listening to it.”

The Symphonic Winds is a highly select group of multitalented musicians who are devoted to the preparation and performance of the finest wind repertoire. The ensemble explores the variety and richness of traditional and contemporary music for the wind band.

“With The Symphonic Winds, you should be able to hear precision, more like what you would expect from a chamber group as opposed to a concert band,” said Tevis. “It’s a fuller, richer sound.”

Members of the ensemble also have the opportunity to work with some of the world's finest guest composers, conductors, and soloists. In addition to its uniform series of campus and off-campus concerts, The Symphonic Winds tours and performs at professional music conventions.
