The North State Arts Journal reports on concert seasons, theatre productions and gallery exhibitions in California's North State, in and around Chico and Redding. It covers ensembles, venues, galleries and presenting organisations across the region, and it also lists auditions for choirs, bands and jazz ensembles.
What the site covers
The site follows four strands. The Calendar gathers season dates and exhibition runs. Press and Auditions collects calls for singers and instrumentalists, along with audition notices from ensembles and training programmes. Posters presents illustrated notices for productions and shows. Kaleidoscope holds shorter notes on the region's arts activity.
How the articles are written
Every text is written in the third person. Institutions, ensembles, venues and galleries are always named and described from the outside. The site does not speak as the university or as any arts organisation, sells no ticket and runs no event.
Articles are written from public sources, and each article names the sources it draws on. Where a detail cannot be confirmed from those sources, it is left out or the limit is stated in the text. The editorial team does not attend closed rehearsals or use private material.
Who the site is for
The site is for residents of Chico, Oroville, Paradise, Redding and the upper Sacramento Valley. It is written for adults who want to join a choir, band or jazz ensemble, and for students and families preparing an audition or planning a gallery visit. Listings are kept plain so that a reader can check a date, a venue and a programme without having to sort through promotional language.

Here is what we refuse to do: print a price we have not seen published. Season pages in the North State often list a single price band and leave the student rate, the senior rate and the Redding date out. When that happens you will read it here in plain words, under the heading What the page does not say, instead of a number we guessed. We would rather send you to the box office with one question than with a wrong figure.
